On May 12, 2025, Mr. Willy Ngoma, military spokesperson for the M23 rebel movement, a proxy for the Rwandan Defense Forces (RDF), rounded up 181 people of all ages at Unity Stadium in Goma and presented them to the press as Rwandan citizens living in DRC illegally. These people, all of Hutu ethnicity, were stripped of their identity papers, which nevertheless certified that they were Congolese. The papers were burned there and then in public. In the days that followed, the witch hunt for Hutu continued and on May 17, 2025, at least 360 people, the majority of whom were women and children, were loaded, visibly terrified, onto buses bound for Rwanda. The fate of many young men and fathers on whom these deportees depended, remains unknown to this day.
